Points in History
History has been shaped by many events that have
represented a tipping point in it. They can be found in ancient times, as well
as in the last years, or decades. The first remarkable event we’ll point out is
the war between the Persian Empire and the Greek city-states around 499 B.C. As
we know, the Greek were able to defeat the Persians, and that marked the birth
of what would later become the western culture. Second, the discovery of
America in 1492. This event was probably the biggest one in the 15th
century, since a “new world” was discovered, and with it, new empires such as
the Spanish, British, and French. It also represented the birth of new
cultures, resulting from the mixture of Europeans and Native Americans. Third, the
First World War or WW I from 1914-1918, as it is well known. This war redefined
many borders in the world map, and also created new countries. At the same
time, it marked the start of the end of colonialism around the world, and the
fall of old empires, like the Turkish Ottoman. In conclusion, the same way these
previous events have marked history, other happenings will always continue to
change it. It might happen tomorrow, it might happen in ten years, or it might
be happening as we write this.
