-          Internet  Addiction

How many hours a week do you spend on the internet? How do you spend that time? Can you go a day without using the internet? These are questions we could use to determine whether a person is addicted to the internet or not. An addiction can be defined as a complex condition of the brain in which it gets obsessed with using a substance or doing a particular activity in such a way that it eventually affects the individual’s mental or physical health, and/or also his/her interpersonal relationships.Among the most common addictive habits, overusing the internet is a real issue nowadays.

The term “Internet addiction” entails different types of internet over usage, such as:  social networking, movies/series downloading, video gaming (which is a disorder), and others. Social networking addiction is very common nowadays, and it has seen an increase with the advances in the technology of cell phones, tablets and devices of the kind. You can tell by looking at people walking on the streets and not looking straight ahead, but into their mobile devices. On the other hand, some people spend long hours watching Netflix, YouTube, and other streaming and downloading websites. This is a very common habit for many of us. This group of people can easily stay up all night just trying to finish a season of their favorite TV show. In addition, a number of teenagers spend more than 8 hours daily just playing video games online. Be if for fun or for money, it’s still an obsession for doing the same activity over and over, and it makes it an addiction.

The question at hand is, however, what can we do to fight this compulsive behavior? As many experts say, the first and most important step to getting to rid of this problem is to recognize you are addicted. Once you know you´re an addict, one thing you can do is turn to family, friends or support groups (not online, of course) for help. It’s never a good idea to keep the problem to yourself, as it may lead to depression and worse consequences. Another thing we need to know is that people won’t stop being addicted overnight, instead, it has to be a process. What I mean here, is that if you surf the net 8 hours a day, a good way to start is gradually cutting the hours down to 6, then 5, then 3 and so on. That way your brain does not feel a sudden change of habits and won’t be craving for that addiction so badly. Last but not least, you can also find other activities and split the time you spend between the activity you do the most and the new ones. These steps can not only work for this type of addiction, but also for other types such as smoking, shopping, and others.
